So ya stuck with the whole paper head thing and thought about it the weekend. As I was lying in bed Saturday it suddenly struck me to add more to my piece, expand on the idea. So what I decided to go for was an open head that was resting on a box/machine that was being scanned by the uv light. Written in either side of the head would be quotes from the book representing the main charcters head being split apart from drug Substance D. this would be written in uv paint and would only show when light is on,as if you were scanning his head !! GET IT !! SCAN ! .............Ya so....It was tricky to pull off because I didn’t know what kind of materials were there for me,as in where the hell was I going to get a uv light and uv paint in so little time !?!?! I asked around and 1 or 2 people had a uv light but it was the type that goes into a proper light in the celling………….not so good….as well as that I was running around limerick city in the rain looking for uv paint….no luck either….was ready to scrap the idea as I only had that day to make a 3d piece till eventually, I got real lucky and found myself to be lent a uv light bulb with an adapter for it to plug into the lamp and discovered that white acrylic paint would do the job inside the head, it didn’t quite glow when shone on but you could definitely read it better with light so not defeating the purpose of the light…..you still following ????????

Anyway enough talk here’s some pictures to get my point across, after all I’m a visual communicator !!

 thats the full finished piece with a Boxing made from wood and painted black,uv light shhticking out the top and some lovely paper graph coming out he front,sorry for jumping ahed forgot to take pics as i was putting it together :/

as you can see the words are not glowing ! but you cant read them without the light on so same concept :) 

the words are quotes from the book that to me stood out for depicting which person he was at the time he was saying it eg. the charcter Bob says "Fucking straights" talking about the regular working class people who frown down on the junkies. Bob was obviously in his junkie state at this time.

Final book Design And MO FO 3D !!!!!!!!! GRRRR

Well iv taken the flower idea and tweaked it and work alot on the back cover,really happy with over all look and design. Maybe 1 or 2 small tweaks still to be done before we hand it up tuesday.

 Im pretty happy with this because it tells a story,and gives you a strange "something is wrong here" kinda feel. I guess you wonder why a flower is on what looks like some kind of a brain wave chart or some sort of medical recording, and also why is the chart/paper damaged? this obviously means its not good :/ ....This is extremely relevent to the book as the blue flower is how the drug is made and this is what destroys him. He finds out that he is ggetting brain damage
 by a number of medical test and brain examinations.

so.........does the cover make more sense now? or is my spelling putting you off  :/

this was another cover I did in the last few days, I REALLY like how it turned out It looks great and eye catching but has alot less meaning compared to the other cover. Its hard to tell which works best,a cover that will catch your eye on the shelf,or a cover that releates to the story.....

must admit im struggling,I have some cool ideas such as a head that can open up and you have to scan the inside of his head in order to read the text,one side blue to show the drug user,the otther side of his head green to show the monitor/detective side of him.............but I cant make a clean non-tackie looking head,im tryin using pages from the book and PVA glue but...that feels like im on art attack :S. i tried casting it with...umm...this casting stuff...but again looks bad and is not smooth at all...so...just going to keep going with the pages as it doesnt look TOO bad,it might work out

Another idea is to "bug" a book, as in hide a camera and voice recorder inside wht looks like a normal book.So when some one is inspectin it, they will open it up to find they have been recorded the whole time.

was also thinking about having pills spill out from the back of the head but thats jus...meh...but ya just going yo see what lectuers say....................you even reading this??

Book Cover Ideas

So I have been playing with some concepts for the cover. Seen as the book has alot to do with

Surveillance like cctv, tapped phone wires and just general monitoring of the public, I’ve come up with ideas with eyes and cctv cameras and monitor screens. 

I decided to move on the strong Psychological side of the book, I was inspired by some images of brain scans and brain waves to put this concept into my cover ideas.

 

The idea behind these images is the blue flower is what is used to make the drug,the stem of the flower is his brain wave,the two together represent his thoughts, the paper is creased and roughed up around the flower to show that this drug is damaging him. All of this is inside his head ( the silhouette) to further shows this is brain,his thoughts, his mind.

I found that people couldnt make out the  silhouette and it over compicated things and took away from the paper grid. 

This research led me on this semi-finished book covers. 

 

 Thats it for now, Ill be back with the finished cover real soon aswell as my 3D piece wich I hope will be cctv footage on a tv, lets hope that passes as 3D :/
